WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mitch McConnell stunned reporters Tuesday by announcing that he no longer wants to be remembered primarily as a senator, party leader, or architect of decades of Republican strategy.
He wants to be remembered as the secret fifth Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
His name, McConnell revealed, is Botticelli.
Standing before reporters in a purple mask and what aides described as ceremonial turtle armor, McConnell said the four well-known turtles have received far too much credit over the years.
“Leonardo led. Raphael fought. Michelangelo partied. Donatello built machines,” McConnell explained. “Somebody had to understand Senate procedure.”
According to McConnell, Botticelli operated quietly behind the scenes for decades, defeating enemies through patience, parliamentary delay, and the strategic scheduling of votes after everyone else had gone home.
His primary weapon was a wooden bo staff.
His secondary weapon was cloture.
McConnell said his preferred fighting style was developed after years of studying ancient martial arts and the Senate rulebook.
“Anybody can defeat a villain in combat. It takes a true master to delay the final showdown for six congressional sessions.”
Reporters questioned why Botticelli had never appeared in any comic book, television series, movie, toy line, video game, or pizza commercial.
McConnell said the lack of evidence only confirmed how effective his disguise had been.
“You don’t hear much about successful secret operations,” he said. “That’s why they’re successful.”
Former staff members said the announcement explained several unusual habits they had observed over the years.
One aide recalled McConnell sitting motionless in a darkened committee room for nearly four hours before suddenly emerging to block a bill.
“At the time, we thought he had fallen asleep,” the aide said. “Now we realize he was practicing the ancient art of legislative camouflage.”
Another staffer said McConnell frequently referred to the Capitol basement as “the lair” and refused to eat pizza unless it had been delivered through a sewer access tunnel.
McConnell also explained why he selected Botticelli as his turtle name.
Like Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello, Sandro Botticelli was an Italian Renaissance artist.
McConnell said the name suited him because it sounded dignified, mysterious, and unlikely to be printed on a skateboard.
He briefly considered calling himself Caravaggio but rejected the idea after learning the painter was known for dramatic movement.
“That didn’t feel authentic,” McConnell said.
Political historians remain skeptical of the claim, noting that the Ninja Turtles traditionally live beneath New York City and fight criminals rather than spending several decades representing Kentucky.
McConnell dismissed the discrepancy.
“Kentucky has sewers,” he said.
He also revealed that Botticelli’s official catchphrase is:
“Cowabunga—pending unanimous consent.”
When asked whether any other members of Congress were secretly mutant reptiles, McConnell declined to answer.
He did, however, confirm that Master Splinter once served as an unpaid parliamentary adviser and that Shredder’s greatest mistake was attempting to bring legislation directly to the floor without first counting the votes.
At the conclusion of the press conference, McConnell raised his bo staff, adjusted his purple mask, and announced that Botticelli was returning to the shadows.
He then attempted to disappear into a nearby hallway.
The maneuver took approximately 17 minutes.
At press time, McConnell was reportedly preparing to confront his greatest enemy yet: a Senate vote scheduled before lunch.
